Project's Run : Pedagogical Meeting

The coordination and discussion of the content of the pedagogical framework and the educational platform

Minutes

Scheuermann proposed that we discuss things in the following order: Establish the communicating scheme, discuss the pedagogical contents and finish with the discussion on the user interface.

After discussion (Sotiriou, Scheuermann) the following procedure was proposed:

  • The themes should be closely related to the school curricula. If there is the possibility to have common material this should be preferred. The responsible people would start with the selected themes develop them and send them to Scheuermann.

  • Scheuermann will design and propose the approach after exchanging information with the schools.

  • The Ellinogermaniki Agogi and Demokritos teams will develop the final units (the lessons) according the proposed approach. Each unit will include theory and background information. There will be exact instructions to the teachers how to teach the lessons in the class. The educational content should be presented in an interactive way (Scheuermann). The instructions for the evaluation will be given per unit.

  • Start feedback with the schools

We should have a target for a first version by the end of January!!!

An implementation guide will be produced (Sotiriou). It will include:

  • The lesson plans

  • The description of the tool

  • Guidelines for the evaluation

Sotiriou proposed to organize video conferencing events among the schools. Start-up the idea with the easier communication between Austria and Greece with existing tools. The 'question of the month' technique should be followed (as in EA), and the 'ask an expert' approach as well (Solomos) to increase the interaction of the students with the experts and themselves and thus enhance the learning process.

Discussion on the tool followed and the parameters of the observations with the telescope were determined (Solomos). The parameters required include the coordinates of the sky where the telescope will point, the selection of filters for the observation, the compression of the image data so that the transfer will be reasonably fast. The type of observation can be of batch mode or on-line observation. Sotiriou has proposed that we could organize Astronomy nights where students, teachers and public would be invited and in which the on-line mode of observation will be used.
Solomos announced that the solar telescope is at hand; we will need the dome and the control system to make it functional. These will be acquired by the program funds.
For the case of selecting the solar vs. the AM telescope there will be a choice, based on photos of the two telescopes in the tool, which the user will have to select with the mouse.
About the user's guide: Sotiriou will initiate it with the table of contents that he will send by email for discussion. The guide should include: lesson plans, work sheets, guidelines of how to use the telescope etc.
Scheuermann will collect specs and requirement for the users interface.
We expect beginning of February to have the first synthesis.
The schools and everybody should be notified for the organization and fixing the date for the first teachers' workshop, sometime around the 20th of March.
