Sofoklis Sotiriou

Dr. Sofoklis Sotiriou has worked at CERN, at the National Center for Scientific Research "DEMOKRITOS" in Athens and in the Physics Laboratory of Athens University. He holds a PhD in High Energy Neutrino Astrophysics and a PhD in Science Education. He is the Head of R&D Department of Ellinogermaniki Agogi, one of the biggest educational institutions in Greece, where has been active in the co-ordination and development of research projects on implementation of advanced technologies (e.g. mobile applications, wearable computers, VR and AR applications, robotics) in science education and training. Since 2001 he is the Director of the Ellinogermaniki Agogi Center for Teachers Training. His main research field is the design, application, and evaluation of virtual and digital media environments that could bridge the gap between formal and informal science learning. He has been involved in a long series of EU joint research and technology funded projects. He is a member of the European Academy of Sciences (since 2003), member of the board of ECSITE (since 2004) and has served as Expert Evaluator to the European Commission FP5 & FP6 Programmes. He has also act as a consultant to the development of the FP7’s Science in Society Work programme. He is author of numerous articles and publications on the use of ICT in science education. He is also author of the Science Textbooks that are used in all primary Greek schools since 2003.

Stavros Savas

Stavros Savas received his BA in Physics in 1990 at the University of Athens, Physics Department, and his Ph.D. in Pedagogic, Didactic of Physics, in 1996 at the University of Athens, Pedagogical Department. Since 1992 he is the Head of the Science Department of Ellinogermaniki Agogi. In parallel he has been collaborating since 1992 with the Pedagogical Department of Athens University on the subjects Instruction of Physics and Organization of Curriculum for teachers in service training courses.

He has been active as project manager in many research projects, also EU funded projects as SOCRATES/COMENIUS, SOCRATES/ODL, SOCRATES/LINGUA and NETDAYS EUROPE. His research focuses on the application of new technologies in science education. He has also act as evaluator of the EC in the framework of SOCRATES/COMENIUS action.

 
Emmanouil Apostolakis
Manos Apostolakis is a physicist. He holds a PhD in Distance Learning and Science Education and a Master in Science Teaching from the University of Athens. He is currently a mentor – supervisor of post-graduate students’ Master thesis in the Greek Open University and in the Open University of Cyprus. He is also a high-school principal in the Greek private educational institution “Ellinogermaniki Agogi”. He is involved in pedagogical research in the R&D Dept of “Ellinogermaniki Agogi” in the fields of Distance Education and ICT in Education. He has a 15 years experience as a trainer (both in distance education and conventional in-service training programs) in the fields of ICT use in education and science teaching. He is also a writer of science textbooks.
 
Vassilis Karamaounas
Vassilis Karamaounas was born in Athens but grew-up in Brussels, Belgium. He undertook his undergraduate law studies at the University of Essex where he obtained an LL.B in English and European Laws in 1999 and then moved to London where he obtained his LL.M (Masters in Law) in Industrial and Intellectual Property from University College London in 2000. In 2001 he obtained a Masters in Management from Vrije Universiteit Brussel. He started his profession career in 2000 working as an EU Programmes Consultant in ELYROS S.A. and in 2004 moved to ZENON Robotics & Informatics S.A. where he founded, organized and managed the Finance & Contracts Department of the company's R&D Division. In 2008 he was appointed Internal Controller of the company. He has significant experience in the financial & contractual management of national and EU (FP6, FP7, IST, eCONTENT, eCONTENTplus, eLEARNING, MEDIA, LLP, ICT-PSP κ.α.) R&D projects and has managed more than 60 projects either as coordinator or partner. Vassilis became a member of Ellinogermaniki Agogi's R&D team in February 2009 and holds the position of the R&D Projects Finance & Contracts Officer.
 
Pavlos Koulouris
Pavlos Koulouris graduated with a degree in Greek Literature and Linguistics from the University of Athens, Greece, in 1994. He continued with postgraduate studies and research at the Institute of Education, University of London, UK (1996-2001), specialising in the field of ICT in education, while also expanding his research interests and activity into aspects of applied linguistics, social semiotics, science education, and lifelong learning. His work experience (1997-2001 in the UK; 2001-today in Greece) is diverse, ranging from teaching language and humanities, to academic and applied research in various areas in the wider fields of educational innovation and lifelong learning. Since 2004, he has been working in the Research and Development Department of Ellinogermaniki Agogi focusing on lifelong learning as a developmental catalyst in rural areas, the use of new technologies in language learning and science learning, the organization of digital educational content, and synergies between formal and informal learning.
 
Angelos Lazoudis
Dr. Angelos Lazoudis received his BA in Physics in 1994 (Aristotle's University of Thessaloniki) and his Master's degree in Physics in 2000 at Temple University, Philadelphia USA. During his Master's studies he worked at Temple University Hospital and conducted research in the field of Functional Magnetic Resonance Imaging (fMRI). He continued his studies at Temple University and received a PhD in Physics (Quantum Optics / Spectroscopy) in 2005. During his graduate studies at Temple U. his was teaching physics and laboratory (1997-2003) courses as a graduate assistant and as an adjunct instructor (2003-2005). From October 2005 to December 2007, he joined the team of Dr. Wolf von Klitzing at the Foundation for Research and Technology Hellas- Institute of Electronic Structure and Lasers (FORTH-IESL) as a Marie Curie postdoctoral fellow carrying out basic research as an experimentalist on cold atoms (magneto-optical traps and Bose-Einstein Condensation). In parallel he was collaborating with Prof. Marjatta Lyyra (Temple U.) investigating the quantum behavior of molecules under laser excitation. Since December 2007 he is a member of the R&D of Ellinogermaniki Agogi (EA) working as a researcher/project manager in projects related to science education. As a member of the EA team he has participated in many EU projects about advanced learning technologies (Augmented reality, Wireless embedded systems, Online educational platforms and repositories) in secondary and higher education covering the fields of science, technology and sports.
 
Vassiliki Markaki
Vassiliki Markaki graduated from the Department of European & International Studies of the University of Piraeus (2005), and studied Art History at Deree College (ACG). She holds an MA in Arts Management (2006), and an MA in Museum and Gallery Management (2007), both from London City University. In the past, she worked with Goulandris Natural History Museum-GAIA Centre and the Hellenic Office of the European Parliament on the design of educational activities. Her areas of expertise include creation of learning activities that effectively connect formal and non-formal learning, as well as environmental education and use of technology in the design of interactive exhibits and unique ‘edutaining’ experiences. She is currently working at the R&D department of Ellinogermaniki Agogi.
 
Georgios Mavromanolakis
Dr. Georgios Mavromanolakis graduated from the University of Athens with a Bachelor’s Degree in Physics and a Master’s Degree in Nuclear and Particle Physics. He did his Ph.D. at CERN (European Organization for Nuclear Research) in Geneva-Switzerland. His thesis was on the development and design of a tungsten/quartz-fiber calorimetric detector, which is now in operation at the CMS experiment at the Large Hadron Collider. From Aug 2003 until Jul 2008 he was a Research Associate at the High Energy Physics Group of the University of Cambridge, Cavendish Laboratory, Cambridge UK. As a member of international scientific collaborations he worked on the research and development of innovative calorimetric detector technologies for next generation high energy physics experiments. He led the various phases of the R&D programmes, from conceptual design and computational simulation of detector systems, to preparation of testing of prototypes, experimental operation and data analysis. He conducted experimental test campaigns at various research accelerator facilities at DESY/Hamburg-Germany, CERN/Geneva-Switzerland and Fermilab/Chicago-USA. While being employed by the University of Cambridge he was awarded the International Fellowship of the Fermi National Accelerator Laboratory in USA to continue his research as a Guest Scientist of the Division of Experimental Physics Projects (from Jan 2007 until Jan 2009). From Mar 2009 until Dec 2011 he joined CERN as a Research Scientist/Fellow working on the R&D of novel scintillating crystal materials with applications in the fields of particle physics, medical imaging and homeland security. Also as a member of the CMS Collaboration he participated in the data analysis of the experiment and in the preliminary upgrade studies of its detectors. In 2012 he was a Visiting Professor at the University of Cyprus where he taught at the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering and at the Department of Physics. In Sep 2012 he joined the Research and Development Department of Ellinogermaniki Agogi as a researcher and project manager of EU funded projects on science, technology and education.
 
Katerina Riviou
Katerina Riviou holds a M.Sc. in eLearning, from the Department of Technology and Digital Systems, University of Piraeus, and has attended the Training Programme for Teachers in School of Pedagogical and Technological Education (ASPETE). From 2003 she has participated in several R&D projects related to education and training under the IEE, CIP, eContent Plus, eTen, Education & Culture ELearning Programme and Lifelong Learning Programme as a Research Assistant or Project Manager. She has attended and participated as tutor in Seminars and Workshops on Information Technology in Education and has several publications in national and international conferences. She has also teaching experience in the field of ICT in primary education as well as in vocational training institutions. She is currently working at the R&D department of Ellinogermaniki Agogi.
 
Dagmar Schäffer

Dagmar Schäffer received her first degree (Magister) in German Philology from the University of Bamberg, Germany, in 1985, and a post-graduate degree (Master of Arts) in Portuguese and Bilingual Education from Brown University, Providence RI. USA, in 1987. In the academic year 1981-1982, she studied at the Annual Course of Portuguese Language, Literature and Culture at Lisbon University, Portugal, and for two years (1983-1985), she worked as a Portuguese teacher in adult education in Bamberg, Germany.

From 1985 till 1987 she was Teaching Assistant and Teaching Fellow at the German Department of Brown University, USA, and from 1986 till 1988 she worked as a Graduate Research Assistant at one of the University’s centers for historical research, the John Carter Brown Library.

From 1988 until 1992, she worked as Director of International Relations at the University of Paderborn, Germany, where she was responsible for student and scholar exchanges, coordinated EU-programmes and organized the University's International Guest House.

She has been working at Ellinogermaniki Agogi since 1992 as a language teacher, being fully responsible for the annual "German Language Exam of the German Ministers of Education" ('Deutsches Sprachdiplom der KMK'). While still teaching German part-time, she has joined the R&D-Department in 1999, where she co-ordinates educational research and projects dealing with Language Education.

 
Fani Stylianidou
Fani Stylianidou has a BSc in physics from the University of Athens, followed by an MA and a PhD in Science Education from the Institute of Education, University of London. She has worked as researcher in two big European projects, which respectively were concerned with the implementation of curriculum innovations by science teachers, and the development of an open modelling collaborative software. Her previous jobs in Greece also included teaching at the university to undergraduate nursery education students, as well as being the deputy national co-ordinator of the OECD Activity "Attracting, Developing and Retaining Effective Teachers". She has acted as consultant for the Education Directorate of OECD in Paris, assisting in the design and management of the ‘Improving School Leadership’ project. In her most recent job she held the post of deputy director at Science Learning Centre London and co-directed a big ESRC-funded project on "Understanding Participation in post-16 Mathematics And Physics" at the Institute of Education, University of London. Her research interests include: professional development of science teachers; pupils' attitudes to science; use of innovations in the science classroom; pupils' difficulties with reading pictures in science; use of computer modeling in science lessons; teaching about energy.
 
Eleftheria Tsourlidaki
Eleftheria Tsourlidaki has graduated from the physics department of the University of Crete where she specialized in computational physics. In 2008 she got her master degree in Astrophysics and Mechanics from the physics department of the University of Athens. Her research is focused on the improvement of the educational procedure by implementing new technologies and achieving maximum interaction between students. Her working experience includes teaching physics, chemistry and mathematics in high school and junior high school students. She has been working in the "Research and Development" department of "Ellinogermaniki Agogi" since January 2010 and her main activity is designing educational scenarios based on using new technologies as well as, training school teachers in using new technologies.
 
Argiris Tzikopoulos
Argiris Tzikopoulos has a degree in Technology Education and Digital Systems from the University of Piraeus (2003) and holds a master degree in E-learning from the University of Piraeus (2007). He has worked as a research and administrative assistant in European and national projects, in the Informatics Laboratory of Agricultural University of Athens and at Piraeus University. He has also worked at the Faculty of Pedagogical and Technological Education (A.S.PE.T.E) teaching Computer Applications in Education and also Educational Technology - Multimedia. Since 2009 he works as researcher of the R&D of Ellinogermaniki Agogi and he is mainly involved in adaptive and intelligent educational multimedia, learning objects and metadata, and on-line technologies that support learning communities.
 
Anna Zoakou
Anna Zoakou has been a member of the Ellinogermaniki Agogi’s R&D Department since 2005. Her research interests are mainly focused to novel applications of technology in both formal and informal learning. She has worked on a large number of National and EU-funded projects with particular emphasis to rural school networks, social networking tools and the connection between school and the world of work. She has a BA in Greek Philology and Linguistics, an MA in Political Science and Sociology and a PhD in Sociology of Education from University of Athens.

Schoolbooks for the Ministry
Teachers of Ellinogermaniki Agogi have authored the official schoolbooks for Science in the 5th and 6th Grade of Primary School, and for German in High School.
